292 Deputy High Commission / Consulates General / Consulates
There are currently 292 Deputy High Commission – Consulates General – Consulates worldwide. These offices are responsible for maintaining relations between their home country and the country of origin. The United States maintains a presence in the following foreign territories: Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each of these countries has its own Consulate General, which can provide services to its nationals in those countries.
Consulate General in Chennai
In Chennai, a number of foreign governments have established diplomatic and trade representations, many of them at the consulate general level and some at the deputy high commission level. Honorary consulates are also located in New Delhi. The United States began maintaining a consular presence in Chennai in 1794, when William Abbott was appointed as the U.S. consular agent for South India. As of 2022, there will be 60 foreign representations in Chennai, including 16 consulates general.

The diplomatic district of New Delhi is located in Chanakyapuri, a suburb of the capital. This area was initially an extension of the city and now houses most of the foreign embassies in New Delhi. The area was developed as a residential neighborhood for Indian government officials and boasts many parks and monuments. The Prime Minister’s residence is nearby, which makes it an ideal place for an embassy.
